Brian Kwong & Mark Ross are proud to present WizardCast. We enjoy talking about technology, Salesforce, and telling very bad jokes.

We are Salesforce experts and passionate about sharing our knowledge and experience with the community. Brian has been a Salesforce MVP since November 2012 and Mark since August 2014. Our unique sense of humor and personality tagged us with our community nicknames. Brian is the Salesforce Wizard – known for wearing a Wizard’s hat and Mark can be often found carrying a little Yoda doll on his back.

This is podcast for Salesforce professionals and technology lovers everywhere. Full of interesting tidbits, humor, and likely many bad puns.

YoWiz: Really Not a Fake Person – What is D&DF16?

You can read more about the event here: http://wp.me/p5Tbvq-1lt

D&DF16 is a group of Salesforce Community members who will be playing Dungeons & Dragons and taking donations for Charity… an organization called Extra-Life.. not a person.

This event is organized by those great folks, John Graf and Nana Gregg, of the NerdForce Podcast.  Our dungeon master is the great, the wonderful, the please-continue-being-my-co-host, Mark Ross – aka Salesforce Yoda.

The game will be Salesforce & Dreamforce themed as the players attempt to help Lord Benioff (and his magical boots) save the realm of Forcelandia from the clutches of the evil Oracular Empire. It’s going to be campy. It’s going to be full of bad puns and jokes. It’s going to be one heck of an adventure. Mark has been fairly tight-lipped about the full story. Makes me wonder if Parker Harris will show up as LightningMan.

Interview: Elysium Avoidance with Peter Coffee

We have a very special guest today, Peter Coffee, the VP for Strategic Research at Salesforce. We had a great conversation on multiple topics including the impact of Pokemon Go, the future of our workforce, the possibility of robots taking over our jobs and the consequences of this happening. More importantly, we talk about alternatives to a whole automatic workforce.

Other topics include how business are watching us and just how likely is drawing a full house in poker.

Gillian was also nice enough to be interview for Not a Fred, but sadly that audio was somehow lost. It may have been user error (Brian’s fault). It may have been due to batteries dying before the recording was paused. It definitely was not because Brian recorded calling Gillian Kris Lande. Not at all. Fun fact (okay, only Brian thinks it’s fun) – today’s episode was almost “Lightning Lighting Lightening up the Salesforce UI.” Which Brian thought was overly clever. Mark pointed out that it was 1. too long and 2. Confusing and missing the whole point. He won. Enjoy.

Today’s jokes are in honor of John Graf (@JohnGraf6) co-host of the NerdForce podcast (http://nerdforce.co/). John listens to us at 1.5 speed so our jokes will “pop.” So Mark and I get some, apparently, much needed practice. Hope you enjoy the jokes John. We have a special one – just for you – after the closing music.

YoWiz: Lightning Power

Our question today comes from Alesia Dvorkina via emailing WizardCast@TheWizardNews.com

“How will Salesforce Admin role change with Lightning coming to a stage? Will Admins have more/less power? What do you think? Should Admins explore Lightning in the Sandboxes, or (especially for more complex orgs) wait till more features are released? What is your take on this?”

Mark and Brian first discuss – briefly – the difference between Lighting, Lightning, Lightening and talk a bit about what they are looking for in the new UI.

Thanks for all the questions Alesia. Mark insisted we answer all of in one episode. Hope we help – thanks for listening.

No Joke. So Sad. Blame Mark.

Holiday Mailbag

Happy Holidays! We close out the year by looking into the Wizardcast Mailbag. We answer questions strangely from everyone named Abby.

We answer questions about the difference between sObject and sObject Collection variables. We talk about how you can prevent users from asking for silly requests. We also answer a Lightning Question by Adam Olshansky (henceforth called Abby). Finally, we wonder just how many beers are owed to Steve Mo.

We make some predictions of what’s coming in 2016 for Salesforce. Mark accuses Brian of being lazy and not coming up with a “real” prediction. Mark starts some controversy that may just have to be redacted for publication.

Let It Flow (Lyrics)

Oh my test coverage is frightful
but the flow is so delightful
And since there’s one thing I know
Let it Flow, Let it flow, Let it flow

My developers are sleeping
And my Users, they are leaping
But my Apex skills really blow
Let it Flow, Let it flow, Let it flow

When its finally activate time
How I hope that my logic is strong
But if you use a fa-ault line
I’ll always know what went wrong

The test coverage is slowly falling
And my devs, they are a-bawling
But we know just where to go
Let it Flow, Let it flow, Let it flow

When its finally activate time
How I hope that my logic is strong
But if you use a fa-ault line
I’ll always know what went wrong

The test coverage is slowly falling
And my devs, they are a-bawling
But we know just where to go
Let it Flow, Let it flow, Let it flow
Let it Flow
Let it flow

The jokes have broken Brian. So going forward we are expanding our repertoire of opening jokes to be anything, bonuses for being Salesforce related.

Adventures of Admin Hero

Introducing the Admin Hero, a Salesforce super hero that fights for Truth, Justice, and the Cloud way!

Leave us a comment or sent a tweet out to @MarkRoss__c and @Kwongerific and let us know if you want to hear more Admin hero.

Thanks to Brent Downey (@BrentDowney) for putting up with our craziness.

For transparency purposes, Mark Ross is an employee of AppBuddy, makers of Gridbuddy. Brian Kwong works for Better Partners which resales DemandTools by CRM Fusion.

Interview – Brent Downey the Admin Hero

Brent Downey has been a Salesforce Administrator for the last 5 years. He talks with us just before he leaves the admin world to become a Salesforce consultant. Brent talks about his Admin career and the path Admins have for a career path – including being awesome admins.

Brent also talks about how his career change may impact in blog http://www.adminhero.com/  We also talked about how company culture and politics can impact having a successful Salesforce implementation and continued use.

It was a great discussion where we cover everything from adoption, culture changing, blogging, and how much we all stole from Mike Gerholdt.

Our opening joke brings back Happy Days. We think you can do better – share your jokes with Wizardcast by emailing us at Wizardcast@thewizardnews.com.

We’re live once again at Midwest Dreamin’ 2015 – in Chicago, IL. Well, we’re partly live. It’s our tenth full episode of the WizardCast and also our tenth episode without Parker Harris.

Career Chatter

We had the pleasure to sit down with Phoebe Venkat – live – at Midwest Dreamin’. Phoebe tells us what it means to be an Engagement Manager. We interviewed Phoebe live right after the closing keynote at MidWest Dreamin’. We didn’t anticipate how prompt people were going to be tearing down the setup, so we’re sorry for the background noise.

Traffic Coordinator to help people find the right resources (in this case Chatter Groups) to get he information they need. Phoebe also provides some great joy to those playing the “community” drinking game.

Help Us – Dreamforce 2015

We are reaching out to our listeners to solve two issues for us.

To get Dreamforce Ready, Mark and Brian are preparing our first Hands-On-Training (HOT) on advance Flows. Brian believe Mark should wear Yoda ears. Mark disagrees. So we’re leaving this in your hands!

First, should Mark acquire and wear Yoda ears at Dreamforce 2015? Second, where should we hold the official, unofficial annual meeting of the Flownatics?

We created a Wizardcast Chatter group in the Success Community. Please join the conversation and vote.

Our opening joke chickens out of our normally high standards. We think you can do better – share your jokes with Wizardcast by emailing us at Wizardcast@thewizardnews.com.

We’re live and unscripted at Midwest Dreamin’ 2015 – in Chicago, IL. 100% live. Seriously. We didn’t have to record some of this after the event due to scheduling conflicts and technology issues.

Fred – Formerly “The Segment Which Shall Not Be Named”

The Segment Which Shall Not Be Named, currently known as “Fred,” continues asking people about their introduction to the salesforce.com platform.

We ask our hard hitting question to Amber Boaz. Amber shares how her first exposure to Salesforce really helped fix her *&@(.

The Segment Which Shall Not Be Named will be referred to as “Fred” until a better name has been providing.

Breeze Shootin’ (Career Chatter)

We had the pleasure to sit down with Nick Lindberg – live – at Midwest Dreamin’. We were in one of the session rooms and you can occasionally hear the whine of the projector fan. Nick works at Redpath and sat down to talk about what it is like to providing consulting services to non-profit organizations.

Brian and Nick apologize to Mark (and the people of Kansas in general) for our abrupt rendition of the Yellow Brick Road.

Salesforce Video of the *Undetermined Amount of Time Until the Next One*

What are you doing to get Dreamforce Ready? Well, in 2011, Garry Polmateer created this video, a Lego version of Dreamforce. This video was mentioned during the opening keynote of Midwest Dreamin’. It’s a little over a minute long and absolutely worth watching.

Wizard’s Log, Magic Date 0709.2015. The WizardPrise is en-route to a regional gathering at the Chicago Navy Pier base. This is the third gathering of such esteem peerage called “Midwest Dreamin'”. I have not seen the likes of such since this time last year.

Commander Mark “Yoda” Ross is on active away mission having gone ahead to assure safe passage for our crew. I hope the red shirted cadets stay safe in his care.

Our mission is critical to the success of the Wizard-nation. We will share our technology and knowledge, gain new insights, and meet with important dignitaries. If all goes according to plan, Commander Ross and I will share the contents of these “Interviews” in future logs.

On a personal note, I hope this missive is found amusing and entertaining and no way eludes to the fact that my recording of the WizardCast failed due to some technical or perhaps personal glitch.

With apologizes to William Shatner and Star Trek fans everywhere.

Mark and Brian have some confusion over podcast plans which leads to a less-than-normal podcast recording session.

Salesforce Tip: Schema Builder

Have you played around with the Schema Builder? It’s been around for quite some time, but many people continue to use the “old” way to create new fields and object. Mark and Brian talk about the benefits of the Schema Builder including being able to right-click and update Field Level Security. Pretty neat stuff. There’ll likely be a follow up video or blog post on this so stay tuned.

Thanks to Shannon Hale for her tweet about using Schema Builder for FLS.

Fred – Formerly “The Segment Which Shall Not Be Named”

The Segment Which Shall Not Be Named continues asking people about their introduction to the salesforce.com platform. Brian has gotten tired of calling this “The Segment Which Shall Not Be Named” and will hereby refer to this segment as “Fred” until a better name has been providing.

Thanks Ryan Headley for being such a good sport and answering our question.

Salesforce Video of the *Undetermined Amount of Time Until the Next One*

Do you wish you were a Salesforce Developer? The cost of DEV 401 training bringing you down? Wish you could get a taste before you jump in and take the training?

Then our Salesforce Video of the Undetermined Amount of Time Until the Next One is for you. It’s a few years old, but the video is a recording of DEV 401 training. It should NOT be used as the sole reference for your to prepare for your exam. A lot has changed, but you can get a lot of the good ole basics from this video. It gives you an insight on what attending the DEV 401 training is like.

DF ’15: Health and Weight Loss Challenge

Looking to improve your health and maybe lose some weight? Want to do it before Dreamforce? Join the DF ’15 Health and Weight Loss Challenge! You can find the group here: https://success.salesforce.com/_ui/core/chatter/groups/GroupProfilePage?g=0F9300000001oZY

Brian is participating this year and has his own weight loss goal of 20 lbs. Which happens to be the same goal for Andy Boettcher, Bill Greenhaw and Mike Martin. So we’ve decided to have a friendly motivational incentive. The person who loses the most weight – ideally meeting their goals – will win a breakfast paid by the other not-quite winners. In addition, we’ll be interviewing the participants for WizardCast.

Career Chatter: Eric Wu – Co-founder Bracket Labs

The Co-Founder of Bracket Labs, Eric Wu, was nice enough to stop by out spacious recording studio to talk to us about what it’s like to an ISV and a start up company. Bracket Labs is the company that produces the great app TaskRay.

Eric has many great insights on have a successful company, including listen to your customers and you should be doing something different every 3 months.

Eric talks about needing to be comfortable with constant change and the importance of marketing. He also talks about the importance of getting to the pain that the customer is trying to solve even when it may result in removing one click from a process. What they are asking for may be right for their needs, but it may not be right at all.  It’s okay say “no” in order to sometimes to get them on the right path.

Our question today comes from Mike Gerholdt ( t) via Twitter “URL Hacks Pro/Cons?

After recovering from the shock of having THE ButtonClick Admin ask US a question, we talk about some of the pros and cons of using URL Hacks.

We also asked the question, does calling a Flow with a URL count as a URL Hack?

We start, as always, with a Salesforce joke that is absolutely original in every way. This episode joke is provided by Brian Kwong.

This episode is late due to the crazy travel and work schedule Mark and Brian has have over the last few weeks. We apologize for the background noise during parts of this podcast. In order to get this episode released, we recorded during lunch time at the MVP Summit.

Salesforce YoWiz: Favorite Summer ’15 Release

Our question today comes from Jeff Joltes (@DevItBetter) via Twitter “What feature are you most excited about in the upcoming summer #SFDC release?

Mark and I talk about our favorite features coming in Summer ’15  including the awesome Visual Workflow and Process Builder updates. We also recommend we all start using the hashtag #ThanksShelly

Summer ’15 also strikes back by removing support for IE 7 and IE 8 as well as enforcing no javascript in homepage components.

We took the advantage of having my handheld recorder with me and seek out new victims. Thanks to Amber Boaz, Adam Marks, Ryan Headley, Francis Pindar (Brian loves British people, honestly), and Carlos Villalpando

We also try to share secret secrets that are completely made up, but still manages to fail the mystical screening of Salesforce Secrets.

We start, as always, with a Salesforce joke… well I should say “joke.” This episode “joke” is provided by Mark Ross.

Mark and Brian talk about our special episode. This is our fourth full episode landing on a very special holiday – May the Fourth – also known as Salesforce Platform Day (Star Wars day according to Mark).

Salesforce Tip: Custom Permissions in Validation Rules

Our tip this episode is all about using Custom Permissions to set your exception in your validation rules. Instead of hard coding that UserID XYZ or ProfileID can skip the validation, you can use a Custom Permission. You don’t need to change your validation rule when your exceptions change, simply update who has the custom permission.

You can read more details about using custom permission from this wonderful blog post http://wp.me/p5Tbvq-ck

You may notice that is a post from TheWizardNews. This is what happens when we have run out of submissions. If you have a tip or a blog post you’ve found particular useful, share it with us so we can share it with the world! You can email us at WizardCast@thewizardnews.com or click “Contact WizardCast” on the right of our show notes page.

Salesforce Video of the *Undetermined Amount of Time Until the Next One*

Our Salesforce Video of the Undetermined Amount of Time Until the Next one comes from the archives. It’s by Michael Farrington, otherwise known as Michael Force.

This comes from our personal archives of awesomness. This wasn’t a listener submission and we didn’t talk to Michael ahead of time – so Michael, thank you for providing awesome content publicly on the internet so we can snatch it for an episode.

We much prefer to get listener submissions and the content creator’s permission ahead time (so we can play snippets on the episode). So if you have a Salesforce video worth sharing let us know! A brief warning – the little “Extra” at the very end of this episode contains some mild swearing and 1 word that has been bleeped. I recommend if you are offended by mild language to end the podcast when you hear the closing music.

A joke this episodes comes from “Jason.” “Jason” – if this is your real name – neglected to share his last name or organization that he works for. It may be due to the quality of his joke, which definitely is low for even the high standards we’ve set so far. Regardless, we appreciate listener submissions and Jason felt his joke was funny enough to share with the world, so you’ll find his joke writer debut in this episode.

Mark and I talk briefly about Parker House Rolls, named for Boston’s Parker House Hotel where it was invited in the late 19th century. Marks claims this may be a Wisconsin regional item but I believe Mark is simply sheltered. You can find my favorite recipe here (Thanks Alton Brown) http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/parker-house-rolls-recipe.html or if you have Amazon, just watch the episode.

Interview: Andy Boettcher – Demand Chain Systems, Chief Architect

This is our second “Career Chatter” interview. There are so many different careers and jobs that involve Salesforce beyond being and administrator or a developer. We explore some of these options be it working at salesforce.com, a partner, or one of the many other areas that involve Salesforce is some form.

Andy Boettcher is the Chief Architect at Demand Chain Systems. His role is a collection of other jobs a little bit of Business Analyst, a little bit project manager, a little bit of a developer, and a little bit of everything.

Andy says, “If you want to help people, an architect path is a really good goal to reach for…”

Andy’s recommends that if you want to become a Chief Architect is to make mistakes, learn from those mistakes, and then teach your peers your lessons. You need a broad spectrum of knowledge from salesforce.com, systems, platforms, web technologies, business and business process. You need to be able to speak comfortably and from a position of experience and trust across those categories.

We learn that in addition to being a Chief Architect, Andy is also a Certified BBQ Chefs. This has nothing to do with his job, but it’s a nice cover for a typo in our interview notes. We also know family means a lot to Andy, despite forcing his daughter to watch Monty Python’s Holy Grail with him.

Salesforce Video of the *Undetermined Amount of Time Until the Next One*

Last episode, we heard a love ballad about the Lightning Process Builder. We continue this theme this episode with another Salesforce love song, this time by Ryan Headley.

WizardCast April Fool’s Special 2015

WizardCast – Episode 1.5: April Fool’s Special 2015

It’s April Fool’s day today and we couldn’t leave today without a little something extra.

Today is the traditional day for pranks. Whether it’s telling your co-workers that their shoes or untied or you’re filling their office with balloons, people everywhere will be the victim and the perpetrator of pranks.

Mark and Brian talk about the Prank Rules of Engagement and why it’s important to carefully follow the rules.

Prank Rules of Engagement

  1. Must not cause permanent damage
  2. Must not cause physical injury
  3. Must not cause financial disruption
  4. Must be easily and quickly reversed
  5. Must not cause a person to do their jobs for more than say a minute – shorter the better
  6. Targets must be chosen appropriately – IE friends who will forgive you and not be mad

Salesforce Pranks

Brian talks about 3 April Fool’s Pranks for Salesforce Admins reminiscing last year’s blog post. (you can find it here: http://wp.me/p5Tbvq-61)

Office Pranks

Mark shares some pranks that anyone can do in the office, although some suggestions could be considered to break the Rules of Engagement. Mark also appears to have a very unhealthy obsession involving cows, offices, and stairwells.
