Say Happy Valentines Day 2017 with Salesforce Pickup Lines!

*tap* *tap* Hello? Is this thing still on?

Hey blog readers! I know it’s been ages since I posted something that wasn’t a podcast. Well, today I was thinking back on some of my more crazy projects and I remembered something. I swore I wrote a blog post about it, but I can’t find it anywhere. So here it is!

Back in 2014, MVPs were asked for their best “Salesforce Pick Up Lines” for a Salesforce blog. There were many, many submissions. Many of these submissions were going to be left out in the cold, to shiver from the lack of light which shone down upon the special few chosen for the Salesforce blog. I felt bad for these pick up lines and decided to save them.

I created a custom object and saved the information. Simple things like the line itself and who wrote it. It just wasn’t enough. I wanted to be able to share this information with the world! I didn’t want to give people access to my developer org. So I created a special page instead. Behold! The Salesforce PickUp Line Generator! (http://thewizard-developer-edition.na98.force.com/PickUpLine).

Now a warning, some of these lines may be a bit… risque. So if you’re offended by such things – best not to even click the link. Don’t do it! Oh, you clicked the link didn’t you? Well, you were warned.

What I like about this project was the simplicity. There’s really only a handful of parts

  • Custom Object & Data
  • Visualforce page to show off the data
  • Custom Controller to query and randomly choose a pickup line
  • Public Site for displaying it without a Salesforce license

It’s a fun little project to hone my developer skills. If I were going to do this again, I might use Flow. Then again, I may not. I haven’t figured out how to do a random number in Flow so I can choose a random pick up line. I was also going to update it to allow new pick up lines to be created. I opted not to do this. I wanted to make sure that reviewed any submissions before they entered the list of visible lines. Just in case someone posted something like “Eat at Joes!” or something even far less tasteful.

So enjoy. Click. Laugh (hopefully). If you have your own pick up lines, post them here as a comment. And perhaps I’ll add them to the list.

Some of them are pretty darn good. They’re 3 years old though, so I’m sure there’s plenty of new ones that could be made
